jane eyre was published in 1847 under the androgynous pseudonym of "currer bell." the publication was followed by widespread success. utilizing two literary traditions, the bildungsroman and the gothic novel, jane eyre is a powerful narrative with profound themes concerning genders, family, passion, and identity. it is unambiguously one of the most celebrated novels in british literature.
born in 1816, charlotte bronte was the third daughter of patrick bronte, an ambitious and intelligent clergyman. according to newsman, all the bronte children were unusually precocious and almost ferociously intelligent, and their informal and unorthodox educations under their father’s tutelage nurtured these traits. patrick bronte shared his interests in literature with his children, toward whom he behaved as though they were his intellectual equals. the bronte children read voraciously. charlotte’s imagination was especially fired by the poetry of byron, whose brooding heroes served as the prototypes for characters in the bronte’s juvenile writings as well as for such figures as mr. rochester in jane eyre (2)。 bronte’s formal education was limited and sporadic – ten months at the age of 8 at cowan bridge clergy daughters’ school (the model for lowood institution in jane eyre), eighteen months from the age of 14 at roe head school of miss margaret wooler (the model for ms. temple) (nestor 3-4)。 according to newman, bronte then worked as a teacher at roe head for three years before going to work as a governess. seeking an alternative way of earning money, charlotte bronte went to brussels in 1842 to study french and german at the pensionnat heger, preparing herself to open a school at the parsonage. she seems to have fallen in love with her charismatic teacher, constantin heger. the experience seems on a probable source for a recurrent feature in bronte’s fiction: “relationships in which the inflammatory spark of intellectual energy ignites an erotic attraction between a woman and a more socially powerful man” (newman 6)。 the brontes’ efforts to establish a school at the parsonage never got off the ground. still seeking ways to make money, charlotte published, with her sisters, the unsuccessful poems by currer, ellis, and acton bell. her first effort to publish a novel, the professor, was also unsuccessful. jane eyre, published in october 1847, however, was met with great enthusiasm and became one of the best sellers. as “currer bell” bronte completed two more novels, shirley and villette. she married reverend william bell nicholls in 1854 and died nine months later, at the age of thirty-nine in 1855 (nestor 4-5)。
the story of jane eyre takes place in northern england in the early to mid-19th century. (“jane eyre” 151) it starts as the ten-year-old jane, a plain but unyielding child, is excluded by her aunt reed from the domestic circle around the hearth and bullied by her handsome but unpleasant cousins. under the suggestion of mr. lloyd, an apothecary that sympathizes jane, mrs. reed sends jane to lowood institution operated by a hypocritical evangelicalist, mr. brocklehurst, who chastises jane in front of the class and calls her a liar. at lowood, jane befriends with helen burns, who helps the newly arrived jane adjust to the austere
after a term’s reading, i finished ten more books, however, what impressed me most is jane austen and her two classical books.
in china maybe we all know liqingzhao, a great female poet whose poetry are full of the emotions from the bottom of her heart. however, in england the figure maybe is my most admirable authoress miss austen who can never have too many respects from the common people just like me. after read her two masterpieces of books pride and prejudice and sense and sensibility, i feel so proud of being female to see a world-famous authoress using her independent thoughts, humor words to show us the relationship between the so-called superiors and the lower-class.
at that time, neither in the east nor in the west, it is not so easy for a woman to become a great figure with literary reputation. in china li made it, while in england miss austen with her unique characteristic also realized her dream after a long struggle with the temporal points. it seems that all in jane’s life, she made a decision between sense and sensibility; once there was an old saying “affection is desirable, money is absolutely indispensable.” she resolutely chose her true love but not a splendid life or a comfortable home, what a pity she can not marry the one she did not really love even a beloved one, in her short life, she finished six famous books with her heart and soul but never married and stayed single for ever.
there is a devil lives in our hearts. sometimes our happiness stems from others misfortune. this makes us feel shamed. every now and then i wonder whether there is a method that can remove the devil from our hearts. in this way, the evil part of me wont feel shamed, meanwhile, the good part of me wont get happiness from others misfortune. after reading this novella entitled "dr. jekyll and mr. hyde", i think its better to shut down this bad idea.
this novella is written by the famous scottish author, robert louis stevenson. it is about a london lawyer named john gabriel utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, dr. hey jekyll and the evil edward hyde.
dr. hey jekyll was a scientist who was always considered as a serious, hard-working doctor. behind this character, however, he was an active, fun-loving young man-about-town. he had spent most of his life trying to remove the devil from his heart which was not fitting for a man of his stature. after much thought, he finally decided to create a drug that could give each side of his character its own separate face and body. then, he bravely drank the drug and successfully transformed himself into the smaller, younger, cruel, remorseless, evil edward hyde. dr. jekyll enjoyed his secret very much--but not for ever after. as time went by, mr. hyde grew in power. after taking the drug repetitively, dr. jekyll no longer needed to use the drug to relief his devil.eventually, mr. hyde grew so strong that dr. jekyll had to rely on the drug to remain himself.he first injured a child in street, then beat sir danvers to death for no reason. realizing he would soon become hyde forever, dr. jekyll left behind a confession and commit suicide.
generally speaking, every man has two sides to his character. just like dr. jekyll was a serious, hard-working doctor which concealed a irresponsible man who pleasured around underneath. dr. jekyll had noticed it quiet well, but he should have known that a normal people could not be two people live uncomfortably together in the same body. it sounds more like "dual personalities". feeling complacent about his creation, dr. jekyll didnt notice that he was trapped. before the experiment, dr. jekyll was just a double-dealer. and after it, he became a person with dual personalities. each personality wanted to control the body. unfortunately, good didnt prevail over evil. dr. jekyll grew weak while mr. hyde grew powerful.
actually, the two sides of a person have well defined power and responsibility, mutual coordination and restraint. they know the appropriate time and situation to behave themselves. you can be serious at work with a character likes dr. jekyll and have your private life as crazy as you want. this is nothing to be ashamed of, but dr. jekyll didnt realize it at that time. during the one-month internship, i have noticed that there are a great numbers of teachers wear a double face. they treat students strictly, meanwhile, they are quite friendly with their collogues and parents of students. this makes their life much easier. everyone plays different roles in different situations. we neednt to shame about it. the double-dealers can always gain advantage from both sides and live well.
when dr. jekyll took the drug and devided into two person, this tragedy is waiting to happen. the two person are quite simply. dr. jekyll shared no effort to do good and mr. hyde committed all manner of evil. through the death of dr. jekyll/mr. hyde, the author tried to expound his point: if you cant rein in your devil, you would be punished at last.
in the unknown corner of peoples deepest heart, good coexists with evil. in the story of deers and wolves, people simply thought that deers could live better without wolves. as a matter of fact, deers could not live without wolves. they maintained an appropriate balance in the forest. but for the chasing of wolves, deers couldnt be strong and healthy. similarly, when separated, the good side of dr. jekyll became weaker and weaker. instead, the evil side of him became stronger and stronger without the restraint of the good side. but the evil side, mr. hyde couldnt live without dr. jekyll, because they shared a body. so when dr. jekyll committed suicide, mr. hyde dead, too.
it is too late for dr. jekyll to realize that having two characters is nothing to be ashamed of. but i learned a lot from this novella. there is a "jekyll" and a "hyde" in everybody. i will face up to my desires and try to strengthen heart for good to defeat the devil. nothing is difficult in the world for one who sets his mind to do it.
main characters: the little prince, the pilot, the rose, the fox, the snake, etc.
despite i"ve not in my childhood yet, i still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. the tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. this summer i"ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. it"s the world-famous fairy-tale by the french author, antoine de st-exupery, the little prince.
as many other fairy-tales, the outline of the little prince is not very complex. i, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the sahara. in this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the asteroid b612. the little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. in that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.
on his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. from these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the sahara, on the earth.
traveling on the earth, the little prince, who sees a garden of five-thousand roses, is overcome with astonishment and sadness, as he considers his rose is unique in the universe before. at that time a fox appears. the fox, who tell the little prince about the meaning of the word tame, becomes his new friend. at the time to say farewell, the fox makes him know that his rose is unique because she is his rose and tamed by him. from that the little prince begins to treasure friendship and be responsible to his rose.
at the anniversary day of his descent of the earth, rejecting the pilot"s advice, he goes back to his own planet by bite of a snake. it"s too far. i can not carry this body with me. it"s too heavy. he said. he tells his friend, the pilot, he must be responsible for his rose, so he has to go back. at the end the author doesn"t tell us the ending directly. maybe it"s more significant for us to imagine, and for more, think over.
one of the important characters is the rose. growing on the planet, she is very beautiful, but her coquetry and vanity suffer the little prince a lot. in spite of they love each other, he soon becomes unhappy. on the time of his departure, he just knows she certainly loves him. the character of the little prince actually represents the children, and their native thoughts and deeds. on the contrary, the inhabitants on the other planets, such as the king, the businessman and the conceited man, they also reflect the defects in the grown-up"s world. the real theme of this fairy-tale with a little sadness, i guess, is the consequence of pure love and friendship in our lives, but not others matters of consequence of the grown-ups.
unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot. i seldom think about the true meaning of love and life before. well, now i can say, with my short sixteen-year"s life experience, it"s like the stars in the sky that lit my heart. the little prince is not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. nevertheless, when i read this book, i feel a little sad ndash; about ourselves, whom are losing more and more innocence.
the first time i opened the little prince, i stayed. not because it is fresh and clear, but those paintings perry st. erik su. in the past year, i have received many painted villain cards, but until that day saw the little prince inside the same picture, i just know, originally those figurines and flowers has been and in such a sad fairy tale in the growth of.
saint exupery dedicated it to an adult, for he had children. "every adult starts with being a child.". but how many more are there to remember?"
the city where i live is young and busy, and people always rush like toilets when they walk. many people do not have time to stop and look at the sky or the sunset; no time to wait for a flower blossom xie; no time to ask what the roadside low head child in thought; and have no time to write; no time to walk barefoot; no time to practice blowing bubbles with slobber.
"little prince" i finally found that there are so many things i neglected, so i have forgotten their former appearance.
we have complicated many of the simple things. we have to leave home, leave their parents, to another strange place to live. after that, we spend a lot of time each year running around in two or more different places, huddled together.
we heard someone's words, we must think twice before, dare to conclude that no other word meaning.
our existence requires many kinds of numerical proof. we take pride in taking up many different kinds of numbers.
we have simplified many complicated things. we have lost freshness and curiosity about the world, and we are accustomed to everything. but in fact, there are so many things in the world that we do not understand. there are too many things that are not as simple as we imagine. we just don't have any interest or time anymore.
"i have a lot of work to do!" this is the most ridiculous excuse i've ever heard.
"in july 3rd, i guess," said one child, "there's one kind of car that he likes best.". so adults began to guess, mercedes benz, big calorie, and so on. as a result, the child said he liked the garbage truck best.
because when the garbage truck comes, there is music.
you see what people care about!
most of us seem to have forgotten their own, have a child, forget you have eyes and ears, can feel natural and beautiful everything created by nature. how many eyes are colored streamer obscured, see four color change, monsoon; how many ears are all the commotion blocked, not to hear the leaves rustle of silence, singing.
one friend said that one day he saw two children running. they threw a pebble, and the stones fell and ran. this is the starting method. be smart?
as we grew up, we became stupid.
my version is ma (unfortunately, the electronic version is not found). i love his country, especially those words he describe the little prince and rose of love.
"it's like a flower.". if you fall in love with a flower growing on a star, then at night you look at the sky and feel sweet and happy, and all the stars seem to be in bloom."
if you want to see the most beautiful and beautiful love in the world, you can't miss the little prince. excuse me, but i don't want to start the subject of domestication with you.
so deep in the night, i'm afraid i got up in the morning and forget what i said.
